HOW DOES IT WORK?

Our early warning system focuses on threats and risks regarding PCs that run on the Windows Operating system, using XP or Vista for the time being.

As such, security threats against Microsoft Office software or against software being used extensively by PC users such as Adobe Reader or iTunes (including iPod) are of particular interest.

As well, exploits against vulnerabilities in popular open source software such as Open Office or Mozilla (e.g., Thunderbird Mail, Firefox web browser) are also monitored.

Advisories are issued when either:

A) there is no patch available at the time we issue an advisory or

B) the vulnerability is currently being exploited by hackers on the net – hence, installing the patch immediately is a must, and/or

C) with a work around or another program (e.g., use another web browser), users can minimize their risk exposure until a security patch is being released

If none of the above applies, no advisory will be issued. Instead we may issue something what we call reminder (see an example from WinCurity here – subscribe) that tells users that the software vendor has issued a patch and that they should have installed it by now. And yes, our reminer is so quick (see the example from WinCurity) that others after us call their material still an alert.

In such a reminder posting we do, of course, explain how users can check or make sure that the have the latest version of the software running on their PC, iPod or smartphone.

security alert or reminder – that’s the question
